Berean Scroll
Effective 16 October 2026 · Last updated 17 October 2026
Berean Scroll is a Bible reading and study app published by Apex Root Solutions LLC. This policy explains what the app keeps on your device, what it sends, and what happens to anything it sends. It describes the app as it actually behaves, not as a category of app generally behaves.
The short version. Reading and study work with no account and no network. Your notes, highlights, bookmarks, reading plans, memory cards and prayer journal are stored on your device and are deliberately excluded from device backups. There is no advertising, no tracking, and no analytics of any kind. Nothing leaves your device unless a feature you use needs it to — and you can switch that off entirely.
Berean Scroll is published by Apex Root Solutions LLC ("we", "us"), a limited liability company organised under the laws of the State of Delaware, with its registered office in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, and its principal place of business in Cedar Hill, Dallas County, Texas. We are the controller of the personal data described here.
Contact us at support@apsoluts.com for any question about this policy, or to exercise any right described in section 9.
The following are created and stored locally, and are not transmitted to us unless you sign in and enable syncing (section 4):
This work is also excluded from the operating system's own backups — iCloud and iTunes backups on iOS, and Android backup and device-to-device transfer. This is deliberate. The app lets you mark material as staying on your device, and that promise cannot hold if a nightly backup copies it elsewhere.
The cost of that choice is yours to manage. If you lose your device and have not exported your work, it is gone. We cannot recover it, because we never had it. Export from the Library, to somewhere you control, or sign in so that syncing keeps a copy.
The Library contains a setting, What leaves this device, with a mode called Nothing leaves this device. In that mode the app makes no network requests at all. Reading, notes, highlights, plans, memory cards and the prayer journal are unaffected — they are already local.
What stops working is stated in the app before you choose it: syncing, the AI assistant, downloading new editions, communities, and signing in.
Each item below happens only when you use that feature.
| Feature | What is sent | What we keep |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Email address, password, your age band (13 to 17, or 18 and over), and that you accepted the Terms of Use | Your email address, a cryptographic hash of your password (never the password itself), a random handle we generate (such as berean-k7m2qx, which other members see instead of your email), a display name if you set one, your age band, whether your email is verified, which version of the Terms you accepted and when, and your plan. For each signed-in device, a session record with a device label and when it was last used. |
| Account emails | Your email address, when you register or ask to reset your password | A one-time link, stored only as a hash, which expires. The email is delivered by Resend on our behalf. |
| Syncing | Notes, highlights, bookmarks and related study material, each anchored to a Scripture reference | Stored against your account so your devices agree. Deleted when you delete the item or your account. |
| AI assistant and drafting tools | Your question, the mode you chose, and the passage text and references the app selected to ground the answer. For the drafting tools, what you ask them to work on (below) | Nothing. The question and its sources build one request and are not stored by us. Only a per-day count of questions asked survives, so that free-tier limits can be enforced. Google, which answers it, keeps it briefly (below). |
| Communities and courses | What you post, comment, share or submit; the communities and courses you join; your lesson progress | Stored and shown to the members of that community or course, under its moderators and teachers. |
| Reports and blocks | A report you make about a post or comment, with the reason you give; a member you block | Kept so the report can be reviewed and acted on, with a record of how it was resolved; a block is kept until you remove it. |
| Subscriptions | When you buy or restore a plan: the store's record of the purchase. Apple or Google also tell our server directly when a subscription renews, lapses or is refunded. | Which plan you hold, the product, its expiry and its status, linked to your account. We never receive your card or bank details; the store takes payment. |
| Downloading resources | A request for the catalogue and for the files you choose, and the country of your app store account | Ordinary web server logs, including IP address, kept briefly for security and reliability. The country (from your app store account, or from your network address) is used only to leave out editions that may not be supplied there, such as the King James Version in the United Kingdom, and is not stored. |
When you ask the assistant a question, it is sent to our server, which adds the passages the answer must be grounded in and forwards the request to Google's Gemini API. We use Google's paid service, under which Google does not use your question or its answer to improve its products. Google logs requests and responses for a limited period, solely to detect and prevent abuse of its service and for any disclosure the law requires; it does not publish how long that period is. We do not send your notes, your prayer journal, your identity, or anything else you have not asked about. Do not put anything in a question you would not want held by Google for that period.
The Workspace's drafting tools work the same way, through our server to the same Gemini service, and send only what you ask them to work on:
None of this is stored by us: the draft comes back to your device and is saved there, in your workspace. Your other notes, your prayer journal and your identity are not sent. Google keeps requests for the limited period described above.
The assistant and the drafting tools are available only to accounts whose holder has said they are 18 or over. Google's terms do not allow the Gemini API to be used by people under 18.
Answers are labelled as AI-generated throughout the app. The assistant is a research aid and is not Scripture, a pastor, or a doctrinal authority; see the Terms of Use.
We use these service providers, each only for the purpose given, under contract and as our processors:
We will name any new provider here before it receives anything.
Reading reminders are scheduled on your device. You control how much a reminder reveals on the lock screen: the reading itself, only that something is due, or nothing at all. A reminder that names the passage has shown it to everyone who can see your phone, which is why the choice exists.
Berean Scroll is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. Where a church, school or other institution enrols minors in a course or community, that institution is responsible for obtaining the consent its own law requires, and acts as controller for the student records it creates. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to support@apsoluts.com and we will delete it. Accounts for people aged 13 to 17 do not have the AI assistant, and are not listed for members outside the communities they join.
Data in transit is encrypted with TLS. Passwords are hashed. Authentication tokens are held in the platform's secure storage — the iOS Keychain and the Android Keystore-backed store.
We keep account data for as long as the account exists. Synced study material is kept until you delete it or delete your account. Community posts remain visible to their community until deleted by you or a moderator. Reports are kept for as long as the community exists, so that repeated abuse can be recognised. Server logs are kept briefly. We do not retain AI questions; Google keeps them for the limited period described in section 4. The per-day counter is kept only as long as it is needed to enforce a daily limit.
No system is perfectly secure, and we do not claim otherwise. Turning sending off stops the app transmitting; it does not encrypt your device or protect anything if your unlocked phone is in someone else's hand.
You can access, correct, export and delete your data, and most of it is in the app. Export your work from the Library, and delete any note, highlight or entry directly. Under Library → Account, Export my data gives you a copy of everything held against your account, and Delete my account deletes it. Deleting your account explains exactly what is removed and what is kept, and how to ask us if you can no longer use the app. You can also write to support@apsoluts.com.
Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object to or restrict processing, to data portability, and to complain to a supervisory authority. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our legal bases are: performance of a contract (your account, syncing, communities, subscriptions), legitimate interests (security, reliability, preventing abuse), and consent where we ask for it. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising as those terms are used in California law.
We operate from Texas, in the United States, and data we process is processed in the United States. Google's Gemini API may process AI requests in other countries. Where we transfer personal data out of the EEA or the UK, we rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects how we handle your data, we will say so in the app before it takes effect.
